The Kist at Whitehorse Hill

The cist is situated near the summit of Whitehorse Hill within an eroding irregularly shaped island of peat at NGR SX 61728547. Standing at over 600m OD, this is one of the highest burial places on Dartmoor. There are no visible contemporary settlements within the vicinity.

The cist measures 0.40cm external height x 0.40cm wide x 0.60cm long. The capstone remains firmly in places suggesting it has not been disturbed internally. When discovered it was overlain by 0.45cm of peat.

Brewery Beer Tasting

tn-princetown brewery 20110630 008On 30 June, 31 members and friends enjoyed an afternoon tour of the Dartmoor Brewery (www.dartmoorbrewery.co.uk) in Princetown.   This is the only brewery on Dartmoor and is believed to be the highest brewery in the UK.   The brewery moved into its smart modern building in 2006 and produces about 6000 barrels a year.  Most of this is consumed in the South West of England, although it will possibly be available in Surrey and Sussex soon (see www.winesforu.co.uk).

A Rare Window of Sunshine

Walkers who joined the DPA's annual chairman's walk to Fur Tor during a wet August week found a rare window of sunshine to appreciate the magnificent views.

The 12 mile walk from Fernworthy Reservoir to Fur Tor and back, via Statts House, North West Passage, Black Hill and Teignhead Farm, represented a continuation of the annual tradition of walking to Fur Tor via different routes.

DPA chairman Val Barns was joined by a group of walkers, including DPA president Kate Ashbrook, and all enjoyed the occasion, which ended with refreshments at a local hostelry in Chagford.

The DPA holds a number of walks and events throughout the year. All are welcome and information can be found by clicking here or by calling the DPA office on 01822 890646.

A Walk in Yarner Woods

An exploration of less well-known paths and exhibits with Phil Page, Dartmoor Nature Tours

tn_Retainng Wall on Woodcock Stream
Yarner Wood was one of the first six designated National Nature Reserves in the UK.  As well as being a monument to the history of nature conservation,  the site also has a rich industrial legacy.  So with a group keen  to explore some of the less well-known paths and exhibits of the past and more recent industries and public utilities,  we set off.
