The DPA and Dunsford Primary School are among the winners at this year's Edward Morshead Awards.
Congratulations to Dunsford Community Primary School on winning the Dartmoor Preservation Association Shield as part of the Edward Morshead Award. The DPA sponsors this award in recognition of the best contribution by young people to National Park purposes on Dartmoor. The school's
Playground Equipment project aimed to maximise the use and enjoyment of the school's external space in part providing equipment made from locally sourced sustainable wood whih in turn helped to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the special qualities of Dartmoor. Also featuring at the awards was the Cairns Project, run by the DPA in partnership with the National Park Authority and English Heritage. The project, organised by DPA member Anne Whitbourn and Andy Crabb from English Heritage/DNPA, received a highly commended certificate. This follows their earlier success in winning the Marsh Archaeology Award.
It was also very gratifying to see the achievements of Maewyn Wilkinson rewarded with a Life-time Achievement Certficate. As readers of Dartmoor Matters will know, Maewyn has been a National Park voluntary warden for over 18 years. During that time she has put in two mornings every week throughout the summer months to clear litter from the New Bridge area of Dartmoor. In the winter she also goes out once a week. Her remarkable efforts and committment are justifiably recognised by this award.
Maewyn shares her award with Prof Ian Mercer whose commitment to protecting Dartmoor's special qualities at local, national and ineternational levels needs no other explanation. We look forward to seeing Ian at our Christmas Lunch where he will be the guest of honour.
