Your views about the Forest Estate

Earlier this year the government consultation on Forests was hastily shelved amidst what at times seemed an almost hysterical reaction to some of the proposals.

As promised, a more measured approach is now being taken and the Independent Panel on Forestry has called for views. The Panel has been set up to advise Government on the future of England’s forests and woods by April 2012.  The terms of reference state that they should advise “on the future direction of forestry and woodland policy in England”. This will be preliminary to the production of a second consultation document which will be published in 2012.

In particular the Panel is asking for responses to the following questions:

  • What do forests and woods mean to you?
  • What is your vision for the future of England’s forests and woods?
  • What do you feel to be the benefits of forests and woods to:
    1. you personally
    2. society as a whole
    3. the natural environment
    4. the economy
  • Do you have any suggestions for practical solutions to best management ?
  • What are the priorities and challenges for policy-making ?

Of course, the DPA would also be very interested to hear about your views, especially as far as they refer to the woodland and forestry on Dartmoor.
