Renewed Turbine Threat

trubines
On Friday 5th August the DNPA raised an objection to a proposal to erect two wind turbines at Thorndon Cross and at Meldon. The objection was raised in response to a statutory consultation from West Devon Borough Council.

The turbines in question would have had a hub height of 24.6 metres with an overall height to the blade tip of 34.2 metres.

In making the opbjection the planning officers have observed that

"... the turbines would be very visible from Common Land and from public footpaths within the National Park, having a detrimental impact on the ability of the public to enjoy the special qualities of the National Park, contrary to the second purpose."

Policies within the Devon Structure plan provide overall protection to Dartmoor and state that development outside the National Park must not damage its natural beauty, character, and special qualities.

The site in question is of special interest to DPA members who will recall that in 2006, alongside WDBC we successfully fought a public inquiry to prevent two similar turbines being erected on this site (Yelland / East Bowerland). Will history repeat itself ? Watch this space !
