Be properly prepared

Be properly prepared for a day of conservation volunteering

Getting started

We usually meet up at 10am and work through until 3pm, with breaks for drinks and lunch. There is no compulsion to stay for the whole day if it isn't convenient for you, but if you are going to arrive late it is best to let the organiser know. You will be told where the meeting point for the day is in advance, but the actual work site can be some distance away.

You don't need any previous experience, just to be reasonably fit and willing to have a go. A good sense of humour helps too, especially when tangling with gorse.

Where you will be working
Depending on the site you are working at you can be anything up to1,500ft above sea level out on the open moor. The climate is changeable and can be noticeably colder than down in neighbouring towns. It can be a lot windier too.

What do I need to bring?

For a day out with us you need to come prepared for any weather - waterproofs, hats and gloves, and plenty of warm layers. Ideally wear walking or work boots, but wellies will do. Tough gardening gloves are also needed, especially for working with gorse! In the summer you may want a sun hat as there can be little or no shade where you are working.

You need to bring food - lunch and snacks - and plenty to drink.

It is highly unlikely that there will be a toilet near the work site so be prepared to make do with a convenient gorse bush!

What will the DPA provide?Conservation Tools_20090603_01 267x364

We provide all the tools that you will need as well as instruction in how to use them safely and what you need to do. There is a qualified Project Leader at each site who will know what needs doing and show you what to do. There is always a qualified First Aider on site as well.

Is there any paperwork?

We keep things as informal as possible. The first time you come out with us we will ask you to fill in a short form with emergency contact and medical details for use in the unlikely event of an accident.

It is always advisable to ring the main contact for a project a day or so beforehand and let them know you are thinking of coming so that we can let you know if there is a last minute change to plans.
